Everyday business, industrial and medical processes generate large amounts of dangerous wastes and by-products. How can this problem best be approached?
Minimising such wastes at source is obviously desirable; but at present substantial volumes of hazardous chemicals are generated every year, which have to be treated, disposed of or stored.
Should such wastes be burnt as fuel in cement factories, which are located around the country, often near to residential areas?
Or would they be better treated in dedicated high-temperature incinerators, where extensive further processing takes place after the burning process, and where all emissions to land,
water and air can be tightly regulated and monitored?
